The Little Black Dress has been the most coveted wardrobe piece for decades. It is something that every woman owns, most likely multiple times over, and the reason we love it so much is ease. You know that every time you put on that dress you look stylish, put together and elegant. How could you possibly be underdressed in a LBD? However, as we modernise our wardrobes and as trends change we are seeing the emergence of the Little Black Skirt, an alternative to the LBD which is just as chic and stylish. Arguably, this piece is also more versatile than a dress, it is easy to style up for those dressy occasions and just as easy to style down for day to day wear. We love this trend and we have compiled the best ways to utilise your wardrobe and wear this one piece multiple times over for every occasion!
We introduce to you…The Manilla Skirt (RRP£70)
This skirt has every aspect of a stylish black skirt that we could ever want. It is made from predominantly Viscose and Polyamide which gives it a great structure when on but also provides some stretch for ease and comfort. It has a discreet side zip and button fastening which we like because it does not interrupt the sleek-ness of the skirt. The shape is a classic pencil shape which is flattering for all shapes and sizes, and it has an amazing mid-thigh side slit going up the left leg to add some fun and character into it. This skirt is an excellent base for any outfit due to the simplicity of the shape and the classic elegance of the style.
So the question is, how to style it? This post will show three different ways you can style this skirt for three different occasions. The first is casually, think meeting your friends for coffee or having a wonder around the shops, the second is workwear, to channel your inner CEO in the workplace, and the final is evening, for a date with your partner or bar drinks with the girls. We’ll show you how great these outfits look and why you need to incorporate this trend (and this skirt!) into your wardrobe.
The first lookbook styles the Manilla Skirt with our Sofie Schnoor Oceans Club T-Shirt.
We would style these pieces together in a casual look because it gives us model off duty vibes and plays into the everyday supermodel trend. We can see the likes of Hailey Beiber and Kendall Jenner pulling off this look as it is chic, simple and elegant but it has playful and casual elements which are brought in by the red accents on the t-shirt and by pairing the skirt with a simple white leather trainer. We have added the Rylan sunnies to this look, to keep it appropriate and practical when the weather starts to warm up again. With a clean and simple makeup look and a high ponytail or sleek bun this look is perfect for day to day life.
The second lookbook shows a great way that this piece can be worn in a workwear or office setting.
The look is clean, put together and suitable for an office environment. We have paired the skirt with the Soya Concept Netti blouse which is a great twist on the classic white button up shirt. The shirt has styling elements of a classic white dress shirt, with the button detailing and the material, however it has a ¼ opening and short cap sleeves which modernise the look. We would style these pieces with the buttons open, and the blouse tucked into the skirt. The benefit of using a blouse like this is the lightweight material does not create any bulk around the waistline when tucked into the skirt so it sits in a really flattering way on the body. For added shape you could even add a belt around the waist. We have styled with the Sylvie Earrings in Gold to add a bit of sparkle, black court shoes and a black handbag to complete the look.
The final look we have created with this skirt is a fabulous, glamorous night time look.
Both the Manilla Skirt and the Vala Jacket are My Essential Wardrobe pieces, so are made from a similar fabric composition and in the same style. So while they weren’t made to be a matching set, the two pieces work perfectly when styled together. We have styled the Vala Jacket as a top here, so would keep the buttons closed for coverage. For added comfort you could wear a slip top or lace top underneath if you would prefer something as an added layer. The blazer has a slight crop to it and naturally falls at waist level, which makes it sit perfectly at the waistband of the skirt. The slight show of skin around the neckline and the slit of the skirt balances out the long-sleeved and longer length of the skirt and blazer in a way that is tasteful and elegant. We have styled these pieces with the Sylvie Earrings in Silver and a sparkly handbag and pair of shoes to add some glitz to the overall outfit! The beauty of using this jacket and skirt combo is that it is a base that can be accessorised however you prefer and with whatever colours you like, really giving you the chance to make it your own.
This post only shows 3 ways that you can wear this skirt from day to night, there are so many more ways it can be styled! If you choose to style your Little Black Skirt in any of these ways, tag us on Instagram! We would love to see all of your looks.
